Rick Antoine started a fundraising website after Hurricane Odile in order to aid in post hurricane relief. One company that wanted to help sent 600 water filter kits to the Los Cabos area to make drinking water more accessible in the barrios and squatter areas of Los Cabos.

The recipients are asked to be willing to be a water dispensary for their neighborhood—only charging 20 pesos per five gallon bottle, which just covers the cost of refilling the big tank with water.

Rick asked Richard to help him with the initial installations. The filters installed in the tinacos have a lifespan of around 15,000 gallons of water. Apart from a crisis, such as was the case with Hurricane Odile, potable drinking water is reasonable and plentiful in Los Cabos. The benefit of the filter system is the availability of very inexpensive potable drinking water, close to home.

Time to Rebuild

Many of our friends, relatives and faithful supporters have written, asking about our post hurricane needs. Approximately 70 percent of our house was destroyed, leaving only our first floor (which is mainly garage with a couple of unfinished side rooms). Now that there is no roof above the first floor, the first floor leaks terribly, jeopardizing our household items that are stored in the basement. Fortunately, the rainy season is just about over giving us around nine months to rebuild.

In God’s mercy, our guest room was spared without any glass breakage—when the main house has very little glass intact. The palapa roof over the guest room has a few holes and thin areas, but also held strong. We are now living in the guest room, with our belongings either downstairs or in our covered trailer, which I affectionately call our walk-in closet.

In our original update we shared that we were praying as to whether we felt the Lord would have us rebuild or move somewhere and just rent (which would be very difficult with all of our tools, ministry materials, etc.) We now have an assurance that we are to stay where we are and to rebuild as the Lord provides the funds. We wanted to be sure to share this decision with all of you, since many of you have been asking how you can be of help.

If you would like to help in this time of need, our greatest need is for funds to rebuild our house/mission station. If you would like to give, you can give securely online from our website or you can send a check to our home base in Michigan and Bry (who holds down Fort Michigan) will make sure the funds are deposited in our account, in the rebuilding fund.

Bringing Hope to Africa

Just two weeks after Hurricane Odile, Richard was richly blessed to have an opportunity to travel to Nairobi, Kenya on a Kingdom Business Alliance (KBA) mission outreach. On Wednesday, November 5, Pastor Michael from Cabo English Church asked Richard to share about his trip to Africa. Since Richard had many, very unique experiences while in Kenya, along with great pictures, it was a moving presentation. (We hadn’t even had time to go over the pictures together, so I was especially thankful for the opportunity to put the stories he had told me to the pictures)!

One of the highlights included visiting one orphanage where the children who have homes to go to at night go home to some relative but spend much of their time during the day at the orphanage. The loving, consistent care, along with extensive bible lessons, give these children a chance for a new life—spiritually and physically—that they probably would never have had without this ministry.

Another orphanage was established by several KBA members several years ago. In contrast to the first, it is modern with extensive landscaping, farming, and livestock, with the look of something you would find in North America. Many of the teachers in this school are pastors who live in the orphanage with their families—their children sleeping in the dorms with the orphan children. This orphanage also gives thorough bible training, as well as excellence in education. Here the hopelessness of the children is erased with the encouragement that they too can grow up to be someone important who can help shape their country or their occupation with a Christian perspective.

In contrast to the hope found at the two orphanages were the boys (including young adults) who live in a park on the streets. These boys always keep a glue bottle in their lip to numb themselves. With only around a dollar (or by shoplifting) they can use the ‘huffing’ of glue to cover the hunger pains, with one bottle lasting around three days. Richard said the boys and young men look like zombies with blank stares and only slow movement. One of the outreach members actually went into shock from seeing and feeling the hopelessness of these street boys who choose to stay on the street.

I wish I had video recorded the presentation to share Richard’s presentation with you online, but I am not techy enough for videotaping to have been my thought at the time.
